When we set off from Rotterdam |
with the Edam, a rusty boat, |
with cockroaches on amidships |
and rats behind every bulkhead. |
We had a little boy |
as Moses on board, |
he had heard before this voyage |
never a tale of sharks. |
|
He was made fun of by the stokers, |
swayed with soup bowls to the table. |
Late in the evening he fell tired on his bed, |
where he wrote letters to his home. |
Once on a fine sunny morning, |
it was on our way back home |
and the crew called him for coffee, |
he did not leave his bunk. |
|
In a duffel bag and with old iron |
He was laid on deck at twelve o'clock. |
The captain took off his cap |
and spoke a rough prayer. |
With "one-two-three-in-God's-name" |
little Ketelbinkie went overboard. |
The men showed no emotion, |
just as a sailor should. |
