When we set off from Rotterdam
with the Edam, a rusty boat,
with cockroaches on amidships
and rats behind every bulkhead.
We had a little boy
as Moses on board,
he had heard before this voyage
never a tale of sharks.
|
He was made fun of by the stokers,
swayed with soup bowls to the table.
Late in the evening he fell tired on his bed,
where he wrote letters to his home.
Once on a fine sunny morning,
it was on our way back home
and the crew called him for coffee,
he did not leave his bunk.
|
In a duffel bag and with old iron
He was laid on deck at twelve o'clock.
The captain took off his cap
and spoke a rough prayer.
With "one-two-three-in-God's-name"
little Ketelbinkie went overboard.
The men showed no emotion,
just as a sailor should.
